July 2nd I’m on the water in Bath Maine having dinner…today I decided to take a chance, to take a detour, to take a risk … to take whatever exit. called to me… and this is how my day unfolded.
This morning I decided to start out early from Hollis, New Hampshire and drive north. Thought I would find places I had yet to discover. I had been up the Maine turnpike in summer for many years on my way to Doverfoxcroft Maine. This year was different. I was traveling north to get painting inspired. To breath. To create new memories and stories I alone had. It is not a bad thing though people might think it is. When your life belongs to you alone you have a choice… what will you do? Today, I decided I would head toward a small spot in Maine called Georgetown. Some may say they know it because of Georgetown Pottery. I had never been, but had seen some photos on line and as a painter… it was calling to me. My first detour… exit 15 to 115 to Yarmouth. It just felt right. Off the exit in town there were houses with heart signs , no words , …so I continued on and though map quest asked me to take a u turn I knew I needed coffee. The restaurant at the marina was great. It had amazing metal bonefish sculptures in the entrance and though I rarely eat in a nice restaurant alone I figured no time like the present. Late breakfast, crispy hash browns and the view …paint worthy! Outside the restaurant was the marina ,boat sales and repair… This is where I captured the best photos of multicolored sailboat jacks…. And boats waiting for their final touches before they hit the open water. On the road again… Georgetown pottery not far away, of course, had to stop. A small (3 buildings) rustic art pottery shop makes you feel as though you were the first person to discover it. Potters at work, beautiful and unpretentious . The shop allows you to wander without even seeing a sales person. Then pick out one small piece that feels like it was hand crafted just for you. I choose a small cup with earth tones and smoky blues that I will drink from forever. The price … a little more than a wine glass at Home Goods. Continue on, I thought. Though the road was winding, I had no idea where I would end up …MapQuest said 4 miles to my destination… that’s a sign. End of the road… 5 Islands visible from the marina, Lobster Shack bustling with business (even though it was spitting rain.) and the end of Georgetown. Picturesque does not adequately describe this place. I should return tomorrow. I can only say if you have seen the Popeye movie with Robin Williams it so reminded me of that town …and in a good way. Little cottages scattered in every crevice of the rocks with the fragrant smell of Rosaragosa. Looking down over Fishermen pulling huge bins of fresh fish and lobster off their boats onto the dock. Children and parents laughing and enjoying their time away …in this timeless village. So … I haven’t figured out who lives in this little marina village … looks like all homes are private but maybe there is a Airbnb situation possible…I am also going to further research the five Islands just off shore. So I thought it best to find a place to stay for the night early because it will soon b the 4th. I drove back to Bath Maine… I had never been there but it is a hoppin little town on the fourth. I have checked some great galleries, a local coffee shop and some eateries. The sales lady told me in one of the shops, It seems people don’t often just “take the Bath exit because it feels right “. But it was worth it. One of my favorite shops was a secondhand bookstore that had rare books. They were piled floor to ceiling with some dust though some in clear sleeves and very little room to walk through. Gentleman owner of twenty years said he loved books and had bought someone’s collection 20 years ago … and knew nothing about antiques or collectibles at the time. He opened his shop and it just grew and there he still is 20yrs later. His place is certainly a story… though he says he can’t …he probably could tell you about all of the thousands upon thousands of books he has in there. I of course could not resist and bought three. Two Have floral illustrations for work and one is a book about the extinction of animals for a grandchild who needs to know everything. My day is done .. and though I think how , when and where I will launch tomorrow… only time will tell. Marie
